1. Enfin libre / Freedom! I'm free!

Le chemin de la conversion (1)

The road to conversion (1)

Man is born free, because this is the way God wants him to be: free and happy.

As the years pass, the cage that he builds around himself has bars of gold.

They are beautiful and good; they are called money, power, and jealousy, sex and pleasure, recreation and distractions.

We can no longer, polish them, make them shine, they are golden.

We love them, we neglect them, we see them but they are our distraction.

Within, we fly around; we jump from a false branch into emptiness.

Ils nous supportent nous soutiennent, nos barreaux dorés.

These golden bars support us, care for us.

Within, I feel good. I can even fly with my own wings, I have lots of room.

From this false branche I don’t need anything; they are all here to amuse me.

And one day, I met God.

He was there, right beside the door of my cage.

Dans ses yeux, j'ai vu l'Amour.

In His eyes, I saw Love.

In His voice, I heard velvet (gentleness).

« Veux-tu voler, mon enfant?  Je t'offre la vie », disait-Il.

“Would you like to fly, my child? I offer you life», He said.

I was afraid; I had never gone out of my cage.

Il y a là le méchant chat gris.

There’s that mean, grey cat.

Il y a là le démon qui rugit

There’s the demon that screams.

Il y a là, le vent qui mugit.

There’s the wind that howls.

J'ai peur Seigneur, j'ai peur d'être libre.

I’m afraid, Lord, I’m afraid to be free.

J'ai peur Seigneur, j'ai peur d'être loin.

I’m afraid, Lord, I’m afraid to go faraway.

Je ne sais pas ce qu'est le loin.  Elle est grande ma volière.

I don’t know what is faraway. My cage is large.

Regarde, je sais déjà voler.  Il sont beaux mais barreaux dorés.

Look, I know already how to fly. They are beautiful, my golden bars.

« Vais-je le perdre ou puis-je les emmener? »

«Will I lose them or can I bring them along?”

« Veux-tu voler, mon enfant?  Je t'offre la vie », disait-Il.

«Do you want to fly, my child? I offer you life”, He said.

Alors j'ai tout abandonné.

And so I abandoned everything.

He opened the golden door, the one that kept me locked up.

He opened the door of my heart, the one where happiness was hidden.

This golden door is so cold under my feet.

It is so vast outside and so many people!

Puis-je retourner dans ma cage dorée?

Can I return to my golden cage?

« Veux-tu voler, mon enfant?  Je t'offre la vie », disait-il.

«Do you want to fly, my child? I offer you life”, He said.

« Si tu veux, tu peux toujours retourner.  Moi, je t'attendrai.

If you want to, you can always return. I will always be waiting for you.

« La porte est ouverte maintenant … je t'attendrai. »

«The door is now open…I will wait for you.”

I was resting, my beak under my wing, on my favourite false branch.

It is soft for my feet, just right for me.

Le confort du foyer.

Home, sweet home.

Et puis un jour, je réveillai.

And one day, I woke up.

The door of the cage remained open.

Je regardai.  Il est là, son visage illuminé.

I saw Him there, His radiant face.

« Veux-tu voler, mon enfant?  Je t'offre la vie », disait-il.

Do you want to fly, my child? I offer you life”, He said.

Il m'attend, il m'entend

He awaits me, He hears me.

When I sleep or when I fly, You know every one of my movements, nothing is strange for You.

« Veux-tu voler, mon enfant?  Je t'offre la vie », disait-il.

Do you want to fly, my child? I offer you life”, He said.

Oui, je le veux.

Yes, I do.

I approach the golden door from my false-branch in emptiness.

Son seuil est froid à mes pieds.

The doorstep is cold under my feet.

It is so vast outside, and so many people!

« T'es là, hein!  Je me lance là. »

«You are there! Hey, I throw myself there.

« Je suis là, tu peux voler.

I am here, you can fly.

« Viens sur mon épaule, te reposer

«Comme rest on my shoulder.

« Et je te ferai visiter. »

«And you can explore around with me

Trois, deux, un!

Three, two, one!

« Je tombe, Seigneur; je tombe!

«Lord, I’m falling; I’m falling!

« Je ne sais pas voler. »

I don’t know how to fly.»

« Je le sais, mon enfant; je te montrerai.

I know, my child; I will show you how.

« Ouvre tes ailes, présente tes beautés, tes talents

Open your wings, show your beauty, your talents

« Ouvre ton coeur, laisse-le battre plus fort et meilleur

Open your heart, let it beat stronger et healthier.

« Ne retient pas ton air, je t'en donnerai; donne sans compter.

Don’t hold your breath, I will give it to you unconditionally.

« N'es-tu pas plus léger? »

Are you not lighter?

I trample on His hand that carries me.

He is with me; He shows me how to fly.

De mes ailes, je le ferai; c'est Lui qui l'a préparé.

With my wings, I will do it, He has prepared me. for this

« Veux-tu voler, mon enfant?  Je t'offre la vie », disait-il.

Do you want to fly, my child? I offer you life”, He said.

« Prêt?

Ready?

« Trois, deux, un: saute.

Three, two, one : jump.

« Ouvre les ailes, bats-en un peu. »

Open your wings, flap them a little

Je vole, je vole, je vole.

I’m flying, I’m flying, I’m flying.

Ouf!

Ouf!

Je suis épuisé.

I’m worn out, so tired.

Vite à la cage dorée.

Quickly, to the golden cage.

« Veux-tu voler, mon enfant?  Je t'offre la vie », disait-il.

Do you want to fly, my child? I offer you life”, He said.

And no…quickly into the palm of His hand.

« Seigneur, es-tu là?  Puis-je me reposer en toi? »

«Lord, are you there? Can I rest with you? »

« Viens mon enfant, je fais te réchauffer. »

« Come, my child, I will warm you.»

Près du saint Sacrement, me voici maintenant.

Now I am here, near the Holy Sacrement,

Rien à dire, rien à faire, je me blottis en Lui.

No need to say anything, no need to do anything, just remain close to Him.

Il est mon ami, ma vie.

He is my friend, my life.
